Will it hurt? Dealing with Pain
There are many questions I am asked constantly about pain. Will it hurt? Yes it can, but how much depends on a lot of things. Certain parts of the body are more painful than others but there are things you can do to prepare:
-Food! Eating before your appointment is extremely important. When getting tattooed your blood sugar drops which lowers your pain tolerance and can make you more prone to passing out. Eat a full meal beforehand, as well as I suggest bringing snack foods as well with you for your appointment to keep your blood sugar up. The longer your appointment, the more food you should bring.
Being hydrated is also important. Hydrate the night before and bring your water bottle with you to your appointment.
-A big part of the uncomfortability is sitting still in the same position for so long. Stretch beforehand and wear comfortable clothing. Stretching is extra important if you have joint pain.
-A lot of pain killers have side effects such as thinning as your blood. My suggestion is to use CBD, either the oil or edibles. It can take between 20mins and 2hours to kick in so about an hour before your appointment time is the ideal time to take it.
You may also take Advil (not Tylenol) .
If you have a long session planned you can take another dose a few hour into starting to tattoo.
-Occupying your mind. Most people play on their phone, whether it is watching TikToks, movies, listening to music or podcasts, playing games, whatever works best for you. So bring your headphones and a charger is also a good idea if you have a long session planned. You are also welcome to bring Sudokus, a book, ect. to distract yourself.
-If you have a menstrual cycle, avoid getting tattooed while on and a few days before your period. Due to hormone fluctuations your pain tolerance is significantly decreased.
